Mapping contest entry
« on: October 23, 2007, 08:19:04 PM »
This is to be entered in this contest: http://brutal.surrogateinteractive.com/contest/. It's made for a game called Brutal, which is pretty much mortal kombat, in full 3d on the source engine.  It could win me either $500, $200 or a copy of Left 4 Dead. I think there's about 8 contestants, so my odds aren't too bad. If the map wins it will be used as a demo, to attract producers. It's highly unlikely it will actually be in the game.  Maps name is Prototype ( that has a dumb story behind it, that I won't bother you with). It's a very open arena with a big fan in the middle and iris doors. It was quite a pain to make, since pretty much nothing is on grid. Fun fact: The map is about 2048x2048x2048, but is maxed out on planes. Anyway, I'm quite happy with the result.
I'm just wrapping it up right now and there's just minor changes to be done now.

I posted some screenshots of this in the shoutbox a while ago, so it might look familiar:

Any suggestions are welcome, especially if they make me 500 bucks.

Smooth. . . one thing I always loved about the later Mortal Kombat levels were the breakable scenes. . . . Possibly thing about something in the environment and / or user switched.  Like maybe the fan only comes on periodically. Anyways it looks amazing, best of luck

I guess that's in the opening/closing doors( you can see one opening in screenshot 5). They open every 30 seconds or so.

"A. All levels should be no larger than a typical 4 on 4 death match map (anything smaller is good) "

thats easily big enough for four on four, and smaller is better anyway. i thought this game was 1 on 1 only at first and was worried it was too big lol. I think this map look AMAZING, and ima go check out the other entries. hows it run?

Edit: i would say breakables would improve the fun lots, as well as prop physics, especially later if they can be used as throwing weapons. Maybe you wouldn't have to actually make anything break, just make the glass able to be cracked. i'm not sure how you would do this, but if you could it would be a good addition.

Those poles that connect the lasers are physboxes. When damaged they become motion enabled, the lasers belonging to it disable, and you can use it as a club. The glass floor is breakable, aswell as the lower glass panels in the dome.

FPS is quite bad really. I get low 50's (8800 GTS, E6600, 2 GB), but since it's only being used as a demo ( should it win..), I don't think it's a big problem. I can't do any optimization, except for lowering faces, but I'm not feeling that.

Don't worry about the fps, this shows some professional effort into making a map and I'm pretty sure when most games come out they are clocked for 60 fps at the highest settings as an industry standard, and you're not that far off.

Well if it wins I lose ownership and can't release it. I'll just get you the .bsp then, but I won't publicly release it. If it doesn't win, well I'll just post it up here I guess.

AWESOME.  It is probably too late but like i think the skybox would look cooler if it were space or something and planets in the background.

Yep that's one. And there's an even better one.

There's also a really cool one that's just a river, with pipes that spit out random-shaped  func_physboxes and they float on the water making that you're fighting platform.(Like broken ice floating on a river in cartoons) I thought it was pretty brilliant. Original, but I don't think that's what they are looking for.

sweet jesus, i wonder how they did it? timer with logic_case that spawns func_physboxes parented to a constantly moving func_tracktrain is my guess, how close am i  \

Nope, it just spawns in tubes, they push eachother out and they float on the water. I guess there's a trigger_push on that river pushing them forward softly on the end they fall off a waterfall and they get 'killed'. It blocked up on me and it was spitting out physboxes without stopping and eventually crashed me \

Well, don't say that yet, most of the other maps have a mechanical theme of some kind, if they decide to go with a space, unrealistic, or futuristic theme, then you have a better shot than any of the other maps.
