Smooth outward curves and humps (FINISHED)

Smooth outward, humps surf ramps.

I want to start off by saying that im shocked none of the pro surf map makers havent make a tutorial like this. I've been trying to figure this out for some time then when i started thinking it wasnt that hard. But for those of you who cant figure it out i made this tutorial:

Before you start i recommend you to do this first.

  • Watch Papercut's video about normal smooth ramps that are not outward.
  • Alt + drag technique video, tutorial here on solidsurf or youtube

Okay lets go:

First make a ramp that is like i have:

(You dont have to have it with the same heightxwidth and all but just make it so its surfable, also make the faces on the front/back nodraw, i forgot that :S)

Next, duplicate the ramp and make it rotate with ctrl+m so its outward:

What you're NOT supposed to do is this:

(If you do it like that you wont surf as smoothly and you can only surf 1 way)

What you're supposed to do is find where the brushes encounter each other and clip it from there to the top on both brushes :

(You might have to lower your grid down and move the brushes around to make the encounter spot be on grid).

Now, in order to make more of those and duplicate them you have to do this on both sides of the brush:

Well you should be done now and able to duplicate them making them smooth surfable both ways!

VIDEO: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnPQ3sNruuY

Note: Moving around in the 3d view in hammer might make you see some glitter of nodraw textures from the front and back of the ramps, but you wont see it ingame or notice it, It works perfectly.

(Atleast for me, instead of whining about this on reply not working just figure it out by doing this again, it works perfectly and dont tell me it doesnt).

Uh, you have to take the ramp you made, once youve clipped it on one side. (Say you rotated it 5 to the side you wanted). Rotate it -10 after that and clip it on the other side of it

Great tut, I'm sure this will come in handy to many. I know for a fact that alot of people on here know how to do this, they just don't want to share they're secrets  \

Yeah, the middle part could be more clear. Not that I don't already know how to do this..

Yea, sorry all, i am currently going to make a Hypercam video on the 2d view how to do this. (I lost the screenshot that was supposed to make things clearer, or forgot to save it). Anyways is this how you make them because ive mananged to make some smooth ramps out of this without getting stuck:

good thing about this, is that people that has trying to figure out how to make these ramps, now know.

a bad this is that we might expect to see many of these ramps from now on in maps, and i find that sucky, as these ramps are epic, and shouldn't be in every surf map.
i mean, eclipse has the most EPIC ramps in history of surf ramps, but if these are gonna be in every surf map (which i purpose) it ain't epic anymore, and people will have to think of new ways to make ramps even more unique to impress people from now on.

good tutorial anyway, decent written, but the pics made it better.

That's why I hadn't written a tutorial in the past Silver, I didn't want them in every single new map because people think they make your map good. I'm done surf mapping for now so unless Roosta thinks of something new, don't expect any new ramps anytime soon.

no exactly, and i'm happy you didn't release a tutorial, or else every map nowadays would have these ramps. but i guess there's no way back now :[

but seriously, now we need new sexy ramps, so paper-cut, you know what to do! :3

Well if youre counting on those outward ramps to make you a pro, you really arent pro at all. Its the map itself i think. Sure i couldnt have posted this but keeping it a secret would be gay. "i wont tell because then my maps wouldnt be as good". Like 10x final, rebelresistance, japan all have remakes with smooth ramps, but i like the originals alot more.

If that's directed at me, you obviously have no idea what you're talking about.

a plus in surf maps, is if the ramps are sexy, and outwarded ramps is. so keeping it a secret wouldnt be as gay as you think.

i bet we wont find a solution for our discussion, but i'll stick to mine: i think it was stupid releasing this tutorial.

It wasnt directed at anyone. And i loved your remix, it wasnt like machine2 so i really dont have anything against it.

Who would keep things like this a secret? I always assumed the same reason that stopped me stopped everyone else : pure laziness. Oh well, good work.

Smooth ramps have a place though, functionality over form and all of that.

Well, that too, I'm quite fucking lazy if you haven't figured that out by now.

is the height of 320 good for surfing or is this cause it does not fit if its more or less? \

actual dimensions arnt that important. The slope is. Just scale appropriately.
