How to Setup a 'Source Dedicated Server' - Step for Step
« on: June 28, 2009, 10:30:34 AM »
Okay, first of all, you gotta install 'Source Dedicated Server' from the Tools list.
(That shouldn't take more than a minute...)
The server would be ready for LAN now...

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________

FOR SURF SERVER: Create a textdocument in "Steam\steamapps\accountname\source dedicated server\cstrike\cfg\" and rename it to: "server.cfg"
Open it up with a texteditor and type in:

sv_airaccelerate 150
sv_wateraccelerate 150
sv_accelerate 10
-tickrate66

( I don't know the best rates, but that should be enough! )

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________

How to set the Server ONLINE?:
To set your Server ONLINE to the internet, you have to find out your IP, which usually changes with every restart, so we should create a DynDNS Account (don't worry - it doesn't cost anything).
That DynDNS thingy, is just another adress for your IP-Adress, so you don't have to give ppl. your new IP-Adress after every restart. If you say, that you don't care about that, you can skip the DynDNS Steps.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________

DynDNS - Step 1:
Create an account here - and activate it!

DynDNS - Step 2:
LogIn and go to MyHosts -> Add Host Services
(CLICK for picture)

HostName: "YourNameTestServer" ".servegame.org" (doesn't matter what you take)
Service Type: Host with IP Adress
IP Adress: Use auto-detected IP Adress
Click 'Add to Cart' (just click next all the time now, it doesnt cost anything, and it doesn't ask you for any information)

DynDNS - Step 3:
Now we gotta download the DynUpDater which keeps that HostName refreshed with your IP-Adress...
Download it here.
Install it, and make sure you selected 'Start with Windows'

DynDNS - Step 4:
Start the program and it'll ask you for your account data. Type your LogIn information in and click 'Okay'
Select the HostService you just created on Dynamic DNS Hosts and Click 'Apply'
You'll get a message: 'Your HostName is now synchronized with your IP-Adress.' or something like that...

Everytime you restart your computer, you'll get another IP-Adress, but this program starts up with windows, and synchronizes your new IP-Adress with that HostName everytime you start your computer, so people just have to type in the HostName as IP-Adress!!

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________

If you don't have a router, you should be able to skip this one, but I am not sure...

Ports - Step 1:
Go to http://portforward.com/ - Scroll down, and select your Router.
Then select "Counter-Strike"

Ports - Step 2:
Do what the tutorial says how to setup ports, but set THESE ports here up, and not the one from the site I told you... The site just shows you HOW to do it...

UDP 1200
TCP 27015
UDP 27015
UDP 27000 to 27015
TCP 27030 to 27039

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Start the Dedicated Server now...
Now people have to type in as IP-Adress:

What you took as hostname...
Example: ShakeTestServer.servegame.org:27015

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________

How to add maps to my server?:
Just download the maps you want (or take them from the maps directory) and then take them to: "Steam\steamapps\accountname\source dedicated server\cstrike\maps\"

Well, you can use sourcemod for anything. Most popular mods are also made for sourcemod now, so it is pretty awesome. Even mani has said that it is better to use that than mani's own admin plugin.

Yah sourcemod including noblock added would be nice because every surf surfer should have it in my opinion (I hate it when i'm surfing and I get stuck because someone else flies against me..)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but AFAIK you can't set a servers tickrate from the server.cfg, it needs to be put into the command line?

Also it would be '-tickrate 66'. (Unless no space also works.)

Mani is a noob-friendly admin plugin that is most likely going to be sufficient for your own dedicated server. But yeah I recommend SourceMod over it if it's for online play with others. There's far more you can do with it in terms of plugins and customisation, although SourceMod on it's own is very limited.

Dont do that, you can get the same things with some SourceMod plugins and installing both will definitely lag your server a bit and there's a change the two scripts get conflicts.

I know this is a MAJOR bump... but under Steam\steamapps\myuser\source dedicated server I don't have a cstrike folder, and consequently, I don't have a cfg folder...

Do I make these myself? Are there certain files I need to put in there to make it work?

Not everyone likes paying for a service that they can host themselves on an extra computer laying around. There is a point to being able to run a server off a machine you own, as opposed to paying for some service to do nothing but own a machine.

I agree with FAJ.
Of course you may find cheap ones. Very affordable if you have any job. But then again maybe you want a Rapidshare account, you're an Ebay addict, or you like good quality porn and want a Brazzers account,... Can't pay it all bro!

I had a home server a couple of months ago. It suddenly crashed one day giving that one error many people had (something with the port that's wrong).
I would like to make a new via srcds but don't want to put all the time in it because it might not work with the new updates (big servers like GE clan server have problems atm...)

I'm not making a public server to have a bunch of friends join... I'm making a private server for a few friends to help me test maps... So if anyone could please help me out with my original question, it would be much appreciated

aint tickrate set with the options of the dedicated (or the launch options for the dedicated server tool) Server.cfg wont be able to launch a tickrate option, in that way ppl could change their own tickrate from bought servers without paying, only by changing a CFG
It took a lot of complicated incest to produce the Buckaj

you are correct hell, it's a launch option (as pointed out earlier d:). and ninja: are you sure you followed the *first* installation step (in steam library, go to the tools tab and install "Source Dedicated Server"). i'm not sure where it installs to by default, but the directory structure will be there, wherever it is, including the cfg directory. one thing i can think of is that it might be in ".../orangebox/cstrike"? i personally prefer using the non-steam srcds (http://www.srcds.com/ for howto).

Yeah, I even re-installed to make sure I didn't accidentally delete it...
Like, I totally re-installed Steam onto my new directory, instead of my windows.old file... so it's totally new, and no cstrike folder... but I'll check out that srcds thing.

Try connecting to it yourself. Perhaps your ISP blocks ports 27015 and 27016, so you would need to use a different one. (I've seen this happen)

i find people can't connect to my server through steam (you need to use the heartbeat command in console for that), so i give them a console line to connect to my server.
ie. connect my-ip-or.dyndns.net:27015; password xxxx
and you need to remember sv_lan 0 always~
