Your map is leaking, but ''nothing'' is leaking..
« on: August 18, 2009, 03:20:02 PM »
Sounds weird? Yes. And it is. After a lot of searching I couldn't find the solution to this. I even trashed a map because of this.
Something in the black world is leaking, while you can't see a thing.

Warning: If you decide to follow every step when you have the same problem, then I am not responsible for any damaged files. The way I solved this worked properly and I really hope it will also do this for you. However, Hammer can sometimes do strange things. And don't worry, I wouldn't have posted this if I didn't knew this would work.

There. Well, what is leaking you are wondering?
After searching and finding nothing, I found the solution by coincidence. All entity helpers were visible by pressing a button with a small circle/ball on it.

I downloaded a custom FDG file, a file that recognizes entities a lot better. To fix this problem you will have to go to THIS site and download the custom FDG file (for the game you want to) and follow the instructions given on the site. Even if you still dont know what this whole thing is (it gets explained on that website very well), just do what it tells you (it is save) and you will see the difference later (for example the entity game_player_equip and of course the fix for this problem)

Okay, back on the track again..

How do I fix this?

Click on the button with the sphere on it (shown in the small screenshot the paragraph above this one) and then it is a matter of dragging and dropping the ''balls'' (they are called helpers, I will call em balls) into the map so they wont go outside the map and leak again.
What I did the first time I found this solution is dragging and dropping them into the map without looking where. I did that on purpose, it's a more lazy decision than putting them in the middle of the entities where the helpers belong to. (and remember, there are no lazy decisions in Hammer)
If some entities still do not work after you picked the lazy decision, then you will know what to do.

How can I prevent this?

Let's first look at how this problem occured. If you start dragging huge parts from the map and drag them to somewhere else in the grid, this problem might occur.
IF you drag parts from your map from a place on the grid to another, then first select that button again and THEN start dragging because this whole problem is caused by dragging the map without dragging those balls. Everytime this button is deselected, the balls will not get dragged and there you go, you have a leakparty.

I hope this helped you out. If you have any questions, just post here.

there is a MUCH easier way to fix this, simply select the entire map, then right click, then click center origin
this problem ONLY occurs if you move an entity with ignore groups ON

thats it XD

That can still result in problems, if you have the entire floor of a linear map coated in trigger_teleport, the origin can still center in the void.

Your *LEAK* wasn't in the void, there was an origin floating around probably.

If you do center origins, it will most likely fuck up your func_door_rotating, if you have any. Atleast that happend to a friend of mine.

I had the same shit 2 days ago. My water kept on being invisible after searching an hour after a leak, couldn't find one, although the compiler said there was one. I viewed the given coordinates and saw fucking nothing!! Then I loaded the pointfile, saw that there WAS nothing. I stretched my skybox to fix it (it was about 100 unites next to the walls...)

helix, as told in my previous post in this topic, I had the same problem. I 'bypassed' the problem by stretching my skybox wall.
Now the same Hammer project just gave another point file error. I have downloaded and correctly installed that custom fgd file.
But the button with the sphere on doesn't do sh*t. I can't see the helpers/balls...  \ fml

select all, drag the balls into a enclosed area. if u can't see anything, youre screwed. : ) Copy/paste it into a new vmf would most likely help. rename it tho.

Screwed indeed... Tried pasting it into a newp project, but the compiler keeps on giving leaks randomly.  \

Goddamn this project was going so well maybe it's time to REALLY quit with all this shit this time.

oh, a simple leak?? I knew that, but if it's so simple, tell me how to get rid of it  \

Also, as said before, the leak changes (it sometimes gets other coordinates) from time to time.

And btw, NOTHING is leaking the skybox i used is one that is hollowed out, not 6 walls put together....

dude, i can see that. But there is absolutely no way it can go into the void. This is like Helix said in this topic: your map is leaking BUT NOTHING IS LEAKING.

So I removed the skybox, placed another one. Now the leak is gone (just for a while probably) but css still crashes when going in to a teleport that has a destination in that (replaced) skybox........................
