suggestion for banner design contest
« on: September 04, 2010, 06:47:17 AM »
Well, lately the site has been changed a couple of times, especially the topbanner. With my (little) experience in graphic design I'm SURE we could have a way cooler one by making a contest. No offence Syntax but now the dark blueish really went over the top...

EDIT: this forum once had a contest too and look how nice it is now: http://www.wietforum.nl/

agree~ the main problem with the new colours is that they don't look well together at all, the gradient bars don't look bad, but with grey text/bkg colors in the main content, it doesn't exactly do justice. i actually submitted one before but i guess it was disliked:

thought it looked pretty cool on the _old blue_ bkg. maybe the quote was too lame, haha.

~i copied this from someone else. it's awesome~

thought i'd give it a try. the more you try reading it, the more messy it gets, but when u know what it says and just glance at it, there's no problem. imo
gimme your opinion.

got the text and repeated background image in gif's. png just worked best for showing it example.

That's actually really nice. Can you post the pngs?  Maybe increase the letter spacing a bit.

Yes it's really nice, i like the small space between the letters. I just think the white is a bit too bright, i think it would look better with a fat (black) stroke around it.
I'll give it a try too

quickies:

Couldn't find the right typefont for the text at the right side lolz..

And the thing is: you'll probably need to redesign the rest of the site if you pick a new banner (with other colors)...

I also wanted to add: 'surf community' or something like that as a 'motto' but I couldn't find the right spot.........

It's nothing personal that I have negative comments to your work again. I would have given them no matter who made those banners.
Now that that's said.
First off, I'd like to give u creds for the colors at the blue one. It's nice and clean. This is also the only one which would work, since the banner is built up by a repeated background image (50px wide) and overlaying text. The green version of the banner wouldnt be possible to even cut in half. Anyway. Let's focus on the blue one. It's a bit generic. Those diagonal lines were overused atleast a year ago, and are imo out of date. The problem with removing the lines from both those banners, is that they are the only thing sorta keeping the banners together. It sorta gives the eye some detail as a reference point. Mostly subconciously, but without them the banner would seem a lot more boring. This, however, doesn't change the fact that it's an overused way to give the image that kind of detail.
I also think the font is a bit stock looking, you could try tweaking around in the tools options for the text.

I seem like such a dick, but this is just my opinion. You might not even find it useful, but as all other forum posts it goes under the "take it or leave it" category.

brave it's good that you comment on this, negative or positive. \
But anyway, it wasn't meant to be like: 'here sintax, take these'
Also, if you see the time between my 'i will give it a try too' post and the banner posts, you'll see it's only half an hour.
About the pattern stamp tool lines, yeah i know they are so overused. It's a quick way to add just that little more to a background, same for the half white circles on the green/yellow one.

It's because I actually only focussed on the colors, wich I think are the main 'problem' on solidsurf...
