Perfect Ramps
« on: September 04, 2010, 04:27:27 PM »
Can't be arsed to see if this has already been posted, and I also can't be arsed to add screenshots if I already made a video.
Please, stop the flaming until you've tried it. And if you don't get it, I don't blame you. Check the video. If you still don't get it after seeing the video, ask one of the SolidSurfers to make a better video for you or explain in more detail.

Here's it:
Most tutorials tell you to align the surfs in a way that takes patience and while it works, most of the time it won't align the surfs properly.
I was thinking that the must be a way to perfectly align surfs in a way that's always perfect, and fast too.
Well, after playing around in Hammer, with the Vertex tool, I noticed that the nodes you move, always end up exactly on the grid.
I completely forgot about it, but when I was making some surframps, the following thought struck me:
"Select all nodes to move the entire brush."
Now, this wouldn't be needed if ramps that are rotated have all nodes resting exactly at the grid. Problem is, they don't.
So here's a tutorial on how to perfectly align surfs in a surframp.

First, you make your regular surf piece.
Alright, hold Shift and move it somewhere else, that'll duplicate it.
Now, press Ctrl+M and rotate it by an amount of degrees you see fit.
You'll notice that the nodes aren't on the grids Moving it won't help. So here's where we use the Vertex tool.
Press Shift+V, and select all nodes. Yes, all! If you don't have all nodes selected, you'll fuck up your surf piece.
Now, you move one point to the other surf piece and place it exactly on the node.

Get it? It's easy! You just need to get used to it.

Too lazy to post pictures, here's a video instead.

I think every person here has figured this out by now, but thanks for posting it anyway :]

I actually didn't know this but I haven't made a surf map in a while. Thanks for the tutorial. For some reason the video wouldn't load in chrome so I had to use the IE tab addon.

I thought so too, but I haven't seen any tutorials about it (besides mine), so I figured I'd post this here.
I also wondered if there are still people using the Alt move method.

Edit: I looked around the wiki, but I can't find a button to make a new page, though it's not really necessary that this tutorial is posted on there. If someone wants to post it there, be my guest. I don't really care about what happens to this tutorial.

@Panzerhandschuh: you're welcome.  \

I'll port this over to the wiki with everything else eventually, thanks for bringing this back up. (Although, I don't approve of you making your surf ramp using the vertex tool, aligning them is fine though <3)
Why so Ryan?

Yeah, I thought someone'd flame me for vertexing my ramps together, but it's not really that big of a deal. I prefer vertexing it because it's only one edit, you can undo it faster. If you check for problems afterwards, only 1 minute is lost...

If you want me to rewrite those, I'd be glad to do it, especially since there's no text version of my tutorial.
I make my maps with Microsoft Paint.

Which is too bad. Vertex editing in the TF2 Hammer can easily fuck up textures. As in, texture that are supposed to face outwards are facing inwards, and vice versa.

I do.. Ok it's not on the grid but it's better than getting fucked up compile errors because of the evil vertex tool \

That would've made sense if this method causes compile errors. But it doesn't.

It's not that it gives errors all the time when using vertex, but believe me, if one day your map stops compiling and you can't find the source of the problem, think again

You need to re-think this. The way he's using the vertex tool it won't cause problems. The way he makes his ramps will, but not the way he aligns them.

Don't make ramps with the vertex edit, I learned that the hard way.
