Make-your-own-beer-label contest
« on: November 01, 2010, 11:10:28 AM »
As most of you know, I am a confirmed alcoholic.
As some of you may know, I brew my own beer.
As you all should know: I am worthless with PS, and graphic design in general.

I am looking for help in designing labels for a few upcoming batches of ale. The particulars are:

- Labels extents are 3-1/3" x 4", landscape
- Label design should extend past these limits just slightly, to avoid white space along borders
- White space must be left in an 0.6"-1.0" strip on either side of the image, for text
- There must be space within the design to display the following information (not in the white spaces):
Name of Brewery (to be decided; this is mostly just B.S.)
Name of Beer (to be decided; invented by you)
Type of Beer (to be provided)
Alcoholic content (to be provided; in %ABV)
Volumetric contents (12 fl oz)
Product Statement (optional, to be invented by you; this is just a small blurb about the product)

Hints and bonus points:
- Puns are appreciated. Especially puns on 'ale' 'ipa' 'malt' 'hops' etc
- Memes are acceptable. Keep it SFW.
- Good support between name/words and images are a plus
- Working GAJ into images is a plus. Make sure to not imply corn as an ingredient in the product; there are 0% adjuncts in my beer

Winner reward will be scaled based on how good (or funny) the entries are. Likely 20 bucks, plus a bonus for each additional design tweak for future batches. Hopefully one of yall can come up with a cool design that can be used for all the beers, with just changes to the image and name. Here is a basic guide I could manage; this is not a template: http://i55.tinypic.com/105vfc9.jpg

Batch #1 to be labeled: An IPA (India Pale Ale) @ 5.5%ABV
Batch #2 to be labeled: A Cascadian Dark Ale @ 6.1%ABV

Likely, a porter and/or a stout by Christmas.

I suppose if the winner, or runner-up is in the northeast, and is of age, they may end up with a free six-pack too. We can work out the logistics of that later.

I didn't know you brew your own beer, I'd love to taste one of your ales  \ I don't think I'm entering this competition, as I'm not really creative with PS (Most creative thing I've made with PS was probably my previous signature rofl), but I'm really curious for other people's entries. I know there are some people around here with mad photoshop skills.
Look at you making that little happy corn cob into a real brand haha

I am not sure if I will go to a printing service, like Kinko's, or use my home printer. I am pricing them out. Assume RGB I suppose. My home printer is Brother All-in-one model MFC-255CW

The beer is better than most you can buy, but I have been sticking to styles which I enjoy the most. I don't really like most macro brews, or lagers in general, so that influences it.

It is also cheaper, by ingredients. The issue for me is that I like gadgets, and equipment, and end up blowing a ton of money on things I don't really need. If I stopped spending on bullshit, I could get a little over 2 cases (~52 bottles) for 30 bucks. I am trying to clone Stone IPA, because I like it, but it goes for over 40 a case \

still gadgets ftw... my wallet just cant afford it atm:/

sometimes we can get some fairly good tasting beer for 20/25 bucks... also if i drive to germany i can get like 3 box' of beer / soda for 20-30 bucks ... still it would be way more fun to make it yourself \

Tastes like a cross between Racer5 and Stone IPA. Sort of a west-coast US Cascadian IPA.

Those are pretty sweet, bravesurf. Think you could do this? :

- Remove the white splash from the pigeon
- Resize the image to allow for about 1" on either side
- Add white space to the left and right sides (this can be 'splash' style), about 1" full height strips
- Remove the punctuation after ABV and FAJ (and add the word 'Brewing' after FAJ \)
- Replace "Your beer is currently upside/down!" with "Do NOT turn this beer upside-down!"
- Re-orient the text-blurb (shitfaced one) to match the curve of 'pigeon'

maybe something like this? just added background etc for effect
now that i think about it, i'll swap the position of the "stickers" on the label. so that FAJ Brewing is on the oposite side, and same for the 5v5 abv thing, but w/e
