Smooth, chubby , choppy, or steep?
« on: November 09, 2010, 05:58:04 PM »
This thread refers to ramps; shape, smoothness and angle.

What is the ideal ramp? - Thoughts?

Say for instance a linear surf map, what would be the best ramp setup for such a map? Discuss whether speed is relevant.

On the other hand; a hard skill staged map, such as legendary.

What would be the best ramp setup for a hard, fun and enjoyable stage here?

I don't know if this is a useful thread or not, but tell me, what is your favorite ramp setup / setting / style? \

4:5 slope. Always. A double sided ramp will be [(8/5)*Height] wide.

The steeper the catch-ramp, the more speed you lose on the hit. It can be used as a skill obstacle, using overly steep ramps, I suppose. You can't get as much lift from them either.

Whether it be an easy linear map or a hard skill surf map, I tend to prefer smooth over all else - in some cases a measure of chubbiness can look nice.  Choppy (I assume you mean placed in a poor fashion?) and steep tend to annoy me a bit.  In the end, if I can go fast on it, I love it.

There's no excuse for making ramps too steep.. And what exactly do you mean by 4:5 slope? Are those the dimensions?

Not the dimensions in units, just in ratio. A single sided ramp (right triangle) will be 1.25 times taller than it is wide.

Ah ok thank you, I'm always having trouble finding the right proportions for ramps  \

This does not make snese to me... that will give you a much larger width than height.

It could be down to 52. something degrees angle until it is unsurfable..

A double sided ramp will be [(8/5)*Height] wide.

By that calculation a ramp that is 1024 units high should be 1638.4 units wide, unless of course you got it wrong and you meant they should be [(8/5*Width] high.

Unless I'm missing the obviousness that is you replace the 8/5 with the width/height or some shit...
