Starting a TF2 Surf Mapping Contest
« on: August 05, 2012, 02:19:11 PM »
Hi Surfers and Mappers!
I'm the head admin of http://uberpirates.com/ and I'd like to start a TF2 surf mapping contest because our main Surf server is going to be 1 year old.

I've never held a contest like this before and need some suggestions regarding: How to rate a map, have judges or let everyone rate the maps, etc. ?
They did lately a contest: http://lowlagfrag.com/forums/topic/208-surf-map-contest-1/

There will be also Prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place!

I appreciate all help that I can get \
btw: You can check our servers here (copy & paste in your Browser url):

I would probably divide it into brushwork, originality, aesthetics, and overall fun.

Interesting..

As for judges; get some good surfers, and experienced mappers to judge the maps.

You should make them submit their vmf's so someone can evaluate efficiency and mapping technique.

what exacly is brushwork ?

Interesting..

If anyone is interested in being a Judge for the contest then simply contact me over Steam (first post is my Steam link).
I only know bucknasty because I used to run a buck-wild only css server \
Going to post this also in a mapper / mapping Forum!

vmf's are projectfiles right ?

so in my first conclusion I can say:
- rating:  brushwork, originality, aesthetics, and overall fun
- get experienced surfers and mappers
- probably also get projectfiles for closer review (if maps got submitted)

Thank you so far \

vmfs are Valve Map Files and brushwork is literally the geometry of the map

Thanks, looked up google and now I know \

What kinda prizes will there be?
Games. 1st Price would be Skyrim [Steam Gift].
I would like to give more but the community just started and I'm currently financing everything without any donations.

btw: How long should the contest last ? I thought about ~ 2 Months... but I don't really know how long one map could take to have it ready for surf.

It really depends on what type of map the person is designing. A good arena combat surf map can take less than a week, but a linear map with a jail that functions well can take a month and a bit. I'd say 2 months would be a good amount of time, yeah.

ooh this looks cool, but honestly were mostly a CS:S mapping community, except for panzer \

if your going to do steam gifts, it might be a better idea to do cash, i know i have skyrim, and that makes me not want to participate if its the 1st place prize.

I would be willing to be a judge, i don't really release maps anymore, but i still do map, and know my way around hammer. I can definitively evaluate the optimization, and what ever else on the map side.

You could give away a steam gift card.. that way the winner can spend it on whatever game he wants.. Giving away cash is worse..

I have a few Chic-fil-a gift cards laying around, I think a total of 3.73 of CFA dollars... I could throw those in?

I already thought that the prizes would not fit for everyone, but I just started out and if the contest will running good I may will do some more in future. Btw you could trade the gift via steam for something else.

That would be great! Just contact me over steam if you are interested in being a judge rather then enter the contest.

I live in EU and I think we don't have here any steam gift cards, but I've also never visited GameStop to check that. If they would have then the currency could be a problem I guess :/

haha, well if you don't need the cards then I don't mind if you will contribute \

forgot something:

Can you name some good sites where I should post the contest ?
I know only:
- this forum
- tf2maps.net/ (talked in chat with them, looks like no one there is interrested in surf maps \ )
- Gamebanana (never really used it therefore I don't really know where to post it...)

Thanks!
