Map I've been working on for the past 2 weeks or so. I'm putting a bit more effort into aesthetics than my past maps, but don't expect anything groundbreaking.

Linear Tier 4 (maybe 5 depending on what I add). Smooth surf, lots of air strafing, and some angles, that progresses in difficulty from start to end. A good amount of short cuts.

  • Redo lighting in all of the map from before 0:50 in the video
  • Add more random shit to make my map look fancy

my thoughts exactly.. Making _h versions of maps is ridiculous.. KSF did _h maps because their shitty timer thing couldn't handle hardmode and easymode being in the same bsp..

Map looks real nice. I think it would benefit from some (a lot) of arrows though, it's kind of a maze to learn atm.

Also if by _h you mean add head blockers, raise walls, make all the gaps tighter and ramps smaller as well as put bars to surf over on every ramp, which is what every other _h so far has done, then pls no.

lol, it's not two different maps at the same time.. For instance parrot_selector or compulsive had a series of buttons that had to be pressed to enable hardmode the next round.. And since the timer couldn't handle that, they made _h versions, which made things difficult for the mappers (me being one of them).. That's the main reason I dislike the ksf timer server

click on your face edit sheet tool, mark your ramp texture, click replace, click browse @ replace with.., find sometin nice and press ok  \

If you wanna have a hard mode in the same map in KSF you need to get creative with filtered teleports or pushes. For example, you could put transparent shield textures over walls or gaps or hazard stripe textures on ramp surfaces that only teleport you when you're in hard mode. Idk if it's possible to create something that only some people can see though.

That won't work. Because the timerwhores care so much about records and shit, they need two different bsps, so the records can be separated. If it has hardmode/easymode in one bsp, the guys who surf easymode will have a much bigger chance of getting the record.

I liked the part with the massive window where you can see a bunch of the map, it looks great. The textures are kinda plain but who really cares.

If LDR Leaf Ambient becomes a problem you can reduce lights and set the lightmap scale of brushes which don't require nice shadows to 256 or something higher.

I usually have brushes default to 128 and then go back through and lower it in places that need it, I've never had a problem with LDR doing this but I don't even know if high LDR Leaf Ambient even matters.

For the _h mode I was going to block off parts of the surf, and the player would have to fly through a broken wall or window and take an alternate route, kind of like the end of exocube_h. Of course I'd remove some ramps, and make some flicks bigger, but the hard mode would revolve around leaving the map and surfing some crazy shit outside.

You have a problem with this? Hard versions of a map are basically different maps. I don't see what the problem is with separating it and tracking records on each. Trackmania folks track cut and no-cut records by themselves.


As for the map itself, detailing later is something I could never do. Once the surf is complete I lose interest, on top of any detail being worth anything potentially getting in the way. Unless of course you're just going to put random shapes on the walls.

Razer take the cock out of your mouth. The bsps are identical, look at the md5 hash, thus they are the same. Didn't you quit mapping forever, why are you still here derailing this topic? There is a special forums where you can let out your KSF hate.

That specific part of exocube, to me, is still the best part of all surf maps present, together with one of the earlier stages where you have to surf through an earlier stage for a part but then take an alternative route.
I think the surf you have is nice and sort of relaxing, but sadly nothing really out of the ordinary.  \ Adding such things as alternative routes and multiple uses for ramps and obstacles could really spice it up. But it's going well so far!  \

This. Going through a map to do the entire detailing afterwards is just too much work. You can always add minor details later on.

I think people cater to combat servers by putting jails in their obviously linear/skillsurf maps quite a bit more frequently than people cater to timer's.

I feel like since I'm not going to be making a jail for it (Linear maps with jails don't work out imo), may as well keep it in separate bsp's, since it's going to be a separate map anyway for whatever servers choose to put my map onto them. (Saves me, and the server owners lots of time, and keeps the map files a bit smaller.)

And I'm mostly happy with what I've done with detailing, just the lighting makes the shadows very ugly, so I pretty much have to redo that, and changing wall textures around isn't that hard.
