surf_polygon will be a skillsurf with 4 stages. It is my 5th surf map, and is on it's 3rd revision since I started it 3 years ago (first version scrapped, second version corrupted by steampipe update)

I've been putting a fuck-ton of effort into this and I hope it shows.

(thumbnails, click to see full)

Current progress: 4/4 stages, 4/4 bonuses.

Main stages are blue, bonuses are other colours.

A fuckton of effort with flat textures?  Surely you can do better than that.

the fuck is wrong with flat textures

they're infinitely more eye-appealing than the same 4 repetitive concrete/metal textures everyone else uses, this is at least an original style

The theme looks kinda ez mode to make. It does look decent at least since its somewhat original and it's vibrant/bright. It looks like you're OCD mapping. I used to map like that with utopia and most of my other maps around that time but now I'm able to make some of the best surf maps (surf_fast, surf_christmas) in about a week.

I'm OCD mapping because of lightmap barf, I even asked you how to fix it once and you didn't know.

This shit: (pic from previous iteration of the map)

The most time being spent on this map is putting faces into various smoothing groups until there aren't massive black shadows dripping from every wall in the map.
Hell I've seen loads of these shadows on utopia and in tons of other maps and they get away with it because they're darker/use normal textures so you don't notice them, on flat white textures they're the only thing you see so I really have to go through the map and get rid of all of them.

If I didn't have to spend all my time making the lighting look perfect, this map would have been done years ago

I actually know how smoothing groups work now but I didn't know much about them before other than the fact that they smooth shadows somehow. I guess the lighting is pretty impressive now that you point it out. I'm just not particularly amazed by the geometry and texturing. It looks good, it just doesn't seem like something that would take many months or years to make.

Best looking map ever made.

ryan_s made the network maps or something, no need to listen to him.

I've spent nowhere near 3 years on this current version of the map, more like 2 months of on/off work. The first version was started 3 years ago, then I gave up and picked it back up a year later, and then that second version was corrupted by steampipe and that kinda killed my motivation to map for another year until I got back into it this summer

s4 going along nicely though

Those third and last screenshots, are those in-game or from hammer? I think they look really cool. Rest is ok, nothing we haven't really seen before but 3 and 9 are awesome, dunno why.

All are in-game screenshots, 3 and 9 are showing off the 3d skybox

There's not a lot of innovation you can do with a surf map anymore so yeah it's kinda hard to bring anything new to the table, I'm trying to add something cool to s4 but I've just focused on making the map smooth and fun to surf.

Pretty long after the fact, but thought I'd chime in since I'm bored at work.

They all look pretty cool, but I think shot #6 was the most eye catching for me.  That reflective surface(?) adds something that seems lacking in the others.  Add more of that \
