Surf Mesa Aether
« on: October 03, 2014, 06:05:44 AM »
So its here, and here it is.

It has some surf and you can go fast. It is designed for 3500 max velocity and 175 air accelerate. It has 2 'secrets', each with their own trail. (Because everybody loves trails). It only has 2 concrete textures, but also other textures that aren't concrete at .25 scale, sorry if this displeases anyone. I'm hoping this will be my last map with the mesa theme, though it may not be. If anybody wants to make a video of the map, I'll gladly edit it into the op. Thanks for having a look and have a happy Friday.

The surf is actually pretty fucking great. Much more fun than the other mesa maps. The difficulty is good, the theme is good, and it's fast. I also like how some parts have shortcuts or optional branching ramps.

Definitely better than the other mesa's in every way, but still has the issue of the ramps feeling awkwardly placed when you surf the map faster. Feels like a panzer map with the insane amount of sustained horizontal velocity on smaller ramps. I really liked how you had the subtle grid where you put the skybox. It's so annoying to smash into the skybox in people's outdoor maps. The checkpoint part way through might be a bit low considering the difficulty of the entire map. Not sure what you were working with, but some of the skybox placement could've been a bit better. It's strange seeing chunks disappear before your eyes into the skybox on such an otherwise polished map.

I wish I could have done something better about things popping in / out of vis. The only option would have been to either render everything on a stage from everywhere (which would confuse the hell out of people and cause even more FPS issues). That or completely block visibility to things where you would see them as they pop in (like more tunnels), but I was on a strict limitation on brushes / displacements. This issue alone was one thing that made me almost completely drop the project, but most people are too uninformed or too unintelligent on the topic of mapping to care or notice it.

The point of the checkpoint though wasn't to make the map easier. Its my belief that if you mess up you shouldn't have an easier time doing the map. As such with that check point, I've seen times over 30 minutes to complete the map, despite the fact that when surfed with a nofail, its less than 1:40 long.

That grid though, unf. It was something I used on another flying mesa map as part of a special request. They wanted the skybox borders to be marked since it was a dogfight / air battle build server. Good stuff.

Oh wow, you finally made a good surf_mesa map.

Seriously though, the other maps are both boring and repetitive. I really like the choice of scenery you've made here, as it is visually pleasing for the whole way.

I also like how there are no blind turns this time around. It was easy to look at the ramps up ahead and know exactly how hard to flick, unlike surf_mesa_mine.

The surf itself was very fun. Some of the flicks were a bit awkward the first time around, but a good thing is that the most awkward ramp in the map can be skipped by taking a shortcut (I'm referring to that ramp in the shape of a U near the beginning). Making this a staged linear is a fantastic idea, as it keeps it possible for the beginners, while making it able to be played linear for the more skilled players. The scenery is amazing. The surf was fast and I loved how much of a challenge this map was (the climatic ending was enjoyable). I also experienced no FPS issues this time around.

I'd go as far as calling this a rookie-friendly surf_eternal.

This map is a masterpiece, thank you for making such a great map.

Although I don't like the way you deal with criticism and that you seem a bit too cocky about your works I do have to admit that this map is amazing.

But since there's no jail and it's therefore obviously designed for timers one still notices that you are no surfer at all. You can climb the rocks in the spawn to jump from them, you can telehop, you can skip awkwardly while flying around the skybox (and no, the "fence" like stuff does not make it much easier there) and there are other "tricks" that people want me to show. A bit more "thinking ahead" and this can be easily avoided.

But nonetheless, visually this map is a masterpiece, I will never even get half as good with displacements.

Beautiful map! I love how much detail you put in your works. For example the hammer-sreenshot on the monitor inside of the house. The surf is nice too but it could flow a bit more on some parts. I also liked the checkpoint idea. Without the cp it would have taken me alot more time to complete the map for the first time. I don't know if this was intended by you but it is possible to shortcut on the very first ramp to the first the teleport. I also got the pink and black checkerboard when i was under water at the waterfall over the house.

But that's just a small issue. This is definitely my favorite map of the mesa-series. \ I hope to see more maps like this by you in the future. Question: what lightmap grid did you use on surf_mesa_aether?

'Jails=good' and 'me=bad at surf' aren't really relevant to this thread though. Try this sub-forum to discuss said concepts. I don't add jails because surfing doesn't need to be competitive to the point of punishment for not being the best. Competitiveness where everybody has a fair attempt is how it should be.

I also got the pink and black checkerboard when i was under water at the waterfall over the house.
-pic-
Shit. Too late to go back on that now. Neither pakrat or VIDE picked that up somehow. Oh well, waters there to be an extra effect, not to be something to swim around in.

But that's just a small issue. This is definitely my favorite map of the mesa-series. \ I hope to see more maps like this by you in the future. Question: what lightmap grid did you use on surf_mesa_aether?
All the displacements are 128, most ramps are 32, though they can get down to 16 or lower in certain places to allow for better shadows where need be.

Idgaf if you add a jail or not, still there are flaws that are just rookie-surfmapper-style which you could have made better by now.

dat motion blur  \

it helps to hide my rough motions  \

YouTube's encoding broke my framerate a little bit, it might seem a bit choppy in spots, looks like I have some figuring out to do between render and youtube

WOW!

This looks great.. haven't had a chance to test it yet, but judging by the videos, you've done a really really good job with this. Faar better than the previous maps.

Havent surfed it but it looks fantastic from the video, I'm glad you're finally finding your footing with surf maps.

I think we've all had this idea at one point or another, but never managed to execute it well enough, so props to you for nailing the island designs. also that gorillaz island/windmill was a cool touch.

gj dude, id be interested in something other than more mesa stuff though.

also I went into this expecting some weird mesa x aether mashup, im disappointed now \

I also thought of gorillaz lol, I wonder if it was intended. Feel good inc!

Also expected that it got something to do with surf_aether at the first glance, but I'm not disappointed since I don't really like aether.
