Make Players Immune to Fall Damage
« on: July 17, 2007, 11:51:31 PM »
For this, you only need a 2 entities.  A trigger of some sort (also possible with a button, the output is the same), and a filter_damage_type.

Create your filter_damage_type and give it a name. I'll name it dmgFilter for this tutorial.  In the properties window for the filter, set the name to dmgFilter, set the Filter Mode to Disallow entities that match criteria, and set the Damage Type to Fall.

Now you need a trigger.  I like to use trigger_multiple, but any trigger should work.  So, tie a brush to trigger_multiple, and make a new output.  It should look something like this:

My Output Named:               OnTrigger
Targets Entities Named:        !activator
Via This Input:                    SetDamageFilter
With A Parameter Override of:dmgFilter

You'll need to type in all but OnTrigger manually, and !activator and SetDamageFilter will show up in red.

As I said before, you can do this with buttons too (really anything that will have an !activator), just change OnTrigger to OnPressed.

If you did this correctly, anyone who touches the trigger will be immune to fall damage.

I've attached a vmf for reference.

Alternatively you can get the latest editlife.net .fgd and use the player entity(Delete after you set the outputs) which targets all the players.

X-Shark came up with this a while ago, he wanted to keep it a secret..

Thanks, but i found another solution. It was to get people stay in a physics object that  for eg can fly, or ride, without falling out, dieing, etc.
I managed to lock the player in place with the Physbox, so no need for the damage filter, Thanks anyway.

When u make a trigger multiple it says it resets every 1 second so what if a bunch of people trigger it at the same time? I have the custom edit life thing but when I set up the players entety and compile it crashes!

Make it a trigger_once.  Or in the output check the box that says "fire once".

Instead of using '!activator' use 'player' . Player does it to everyone.

If you remove the water you'll just get the sound of your legs breaking if you're falling from high enough.  There really is no way around sounds when you land as far as I know.  Unless of course you just delete that sound from the sound folder.

spoz, do you happen to know the name of the sound(s) I would need to override?

Also could someone explain what SmOoth  means by using the player entity? I tried setting that up but the map was exiting with weird errors before it would even start.

Try setting a trigger_push w/ 750 upwards, maby will "remove" the sound.

Remove the 'player' entity before you compile. You don't really have to place it at all, it's jsut easier to setup outputs if you do.

Hey

Thanks for the tutorial.

Currently I have a brush with trigger texture and the trigger is trigger_teleport, can I apply the output thing to that? I tried but OnTrigger is red as well... and it doesn't work when I test it

Any ideas?

do you really need a trigger? bc all you have to do is made the damage filter and set it so it doesn't allow falling and you should be good

Yes, you need a trigger, that is how it applies the filter to you \

This might be a stupid question, but is there a way to set the filter to the "world"? If the "world" didn't have Fall damage, the player wouldn't be able to be hurt by it..

Why would you want to? This doesn't stop fall damage from happening, it just makes you immune to it.

:X I dunno, just might eliminate the problem of making sure every single player is effected by the immunity. Forget about it. \

setting it to target player makes every single player get the filter. The only people that will not are late spawners, at which point you would want to fire the trigger for the filter again.

Or you could have individual triggers for each person that are trigger_multiple so late spawners get affected too.
What the fuck happened?

Hello all

After playing around with the above method, of which worked fine, I decided to use the same method to prevent ppl from getting Blast damage (eg from grenades) which also worked fine. However, I am having trouble getting them both to work at the same time eg fall prevention and blast prevention. Is anyone aware of a way to make this possible? I can only get 1 to work at a time.

Thanks for all the hard work.

Set the entity to allow this only, or whatever it is, and then pick a damage type that won't be used, like shock.

could i just put a trigger_something over the entier thing and tie it to something else? not very big with drilling al the entities in my head...
